According to Wikipedia : Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 22-yard (20-metre) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat (and running between the wickets), while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat and before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. When ten batters have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches.

History of Cricket :

There is general consensus among experts that cricket may have been invented during the Saxon or Norman period by children living in the Weald, an area of dense forests and clearings in south-east England. The first reference to cricket played as an adult sport was in 1611, and in the same year, a glossary defined cricket as a boys' game. It is also believed that the cricket may have originated from the ball, with the intervention of a batsman trying to prevent the ball from reaching its target.

Rural cricket had developed by the mid-17th century, and the first English "county teams" were formed in the latter part of the century, as "local specialists" of rural cricket were appointed as early professionals. The first known game in which teams use county names is in 1709.

The origin of cricket is unknown. Most likely, its name was derived from the Old English cris, meaning "stick," and, in its vulgar form, resembles a 13th-century game known as club-ball. Cricket flourished in England in the 18th century, largely due to the interest of noble landowners who tested their skills on the playground with their cultivators and local farmers. Records show that the Kent and London teams played each other in 1719 and that Kent and Sussex met in 1728. The earliest written laws (rules) date back to 1744. The Hambledon Club in Hampshire was the center of cricket from 1768 to about 1788.

Cricket established itself as a major sport in the countries south-east of London and England in the first half of the 18th century. Its spread was limited by travel constraints, but it was gradually gaining popularity in other parts of England and women's cricket began in 1745, when the first known match was played in Surrey.

In 1744, the first rules of cricket were written and later revised in 1774, when innovations such as LBW, a third stump, the middle stump and maximum bat width were added. The codes were drawn up by the "Star and Garter Club", whose members eventually founded the famous Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's in 1787. The MCC immediately became the custodian of the laws and has been amended since then.

The ball stopped rolling on the ground sometime after 1760 when bowlers began to pitch the ball, and in response to that innovation, the straight bat replaced the old "hockey-stick" style of bat. Hambledon Club in Hampshire was the focal point of the game for almost thirty years until the formation of the MCC and the opening of the Lord's Cricket Ground in 1787. And gradually cricket started becoming popular in all the countries. People in all countries started liking to play it. With the passage of time, the rules of the game also changed, and the way of playing also changed.

According to Wikipedia : The sport of cricket has a known history beginning in the late 16th century. Having originated in south-east England, it became the country's national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries. International matches have been played since 1844 and Test cricket began, retrospectively recognised, in 1877. Cricket is the world's second most popular spectator sport after association football (soccer). Governance is by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which has over one hundred countries and territories in membership although only twelve currently play Test cricket.
